What is Expected Value (EV) in Sports Betting?

Expected Value (EV) is the mathematical measure of how much you can expect to win or lose per bet on average. In sports betting, a positive EV means the odds offered by the bookmaker are higher than the true probability of the outcome. Over hundreds of bets, positive EV bets generate profit regardless of short-term variance. This is the fundamental principle behind professional sports betting and the core of OdinPicks methodology.

For example, if you estimate a 55% probability on odds of 1.90: EV = (0.55 x 1.90) - 1 = +4.5%. This means that, on average, you earn 4.5 cents for every euro wagered. OdinPicks calculates EV for every pick using Pinnacle no-vig odds as the benchmark for true probability.

Kelly Criterion for Bankroll Management

The Kelly Criterion is a mathematical formula that determines the optimal bet size based on your edge and odds. It maximizes long-term bankroll growth while minimizing the risk of ruin. At OdinPicks, we use 1/4 Kelly (Quarter Kelly) with a hard cap at 3% of bankroll per bet. This fractional approach reduces variance significantly compared to Full Kelly while still capturing most of the theoretical growth rate.
